Skills Stores Information

  • Are you looking to re-train or re-enter the workforce?
  • Do you have skills and experience but no 'piece of paper' to prove it?
  • Do you need information on courses or training for employment or career improvement but don’t know where to start?
  • Are you a business looking to increase the skills of your workforce?

If you answered ‘yes’ to any of the above, then a visit to your nearest skills store can help you recognise your skills or the skills of your staff and build your future.

What are skills stores?

Skills stores are a new Victorian Government service, designed to make Victoria’s vocational education and training (VET) system more accessible and easier to understand.

Skills stores provide friendly, expert advice on the many opportunities and options available through Victoria’s VET system.

Skills stores help people gain recognition for current skills and provide guidance on how best to gain qualifications or update or improve existing qualifications.

What happens when I visit a skills store?

When people visit a skills store, they can make an appointment with one of the consultants. The consultant will provide information about the Victorian vocational education and training (VET) system and then discusses clients’ current skills in order to identify how these skills may be counted towards a nationally recognised qualification.

The consultant can then give clients a personal referral to a TAFE institution or other registered training organization (RTO) to have those skills formally assessed. That way, existing skills and experience may be recognised by a qualification or a Statement of Attainment without training having to be repeated unnecessarily.

Where is my closest skills store? Skills stores are located in metropolitan Melbourne and in regional Victoria.

What is recognition of prior learning?

Does it cost anything to use the skills store services?   No. The services offered by skills stores are completely free. Education and training recommended by skills stores may include the usual fees charged to students and trainees.
